Hand carved puppet from North Java (female)

These rod puppets come from Cirebon, a town in Northern Java. They have a hand carved head and body and are dressed in traditional costume with a batik skirt and striped jacket. Complete with a wooden block for standing the puppet in.
These puppets are all individually made and may vary slightly from the photographs. |

Felt doll from Uzbekistan

These dolls are made by hand and each one is an individual! The women who make them are expert felt makers and their skills are supported by working for this UNESCO sponsored project. There are three different models to choose from...

All have long plaits and traditional dress and a unique expression.

Turkish traditional natural dyed kilim
|
| |
This traditional kilim (flat weave rug) was woven by women in Konya in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The rug is made from naturally dyed sheep’s wool which has been hand spun on a drop spindle. The wide range of colours are obtained from madder root which gives many different shades from dark red to apricot, indigo for all kinds of blue, camomile, dyers weld and other locally grown plants for yellow, walnut shells, pomegranate skins and oak tree galls for shades of brown and mauve. Green is made from indigo and yellow dyes.
Vegetable dyeing is presently enjoying a renaissance in Turkey after having completely died out in the early 20th century.

Silver hill tribe necklace

This very unusual necklace was hand made in the North of Thailand by Karen silver workers. The design is a traditional one and is completely unique.
The pendant is 8 cms long and 2.5 cms wide at the widest point of the crescent and the hand made silver chain is 45 cms long. |

This very unusual pendant was hand made in the North of Thailand by Karen silver workers. The design is a traditional one and represents a small chest or locker where the soul is kept for safe keeping.
