Leather shadow puppet Gatotkaca

  This is a smaller version of the famous leather shadow puppets (or wayang kulit) of Java. The puppets are made of beautifully painted leather with horn sticks. This character is Gatotkaca, a hero of the Mahabarata story which is often performed in Javanese shadow theatre. It measures approx. 33 cms x 12 cms

Storm clouds hand drawn Batik

  A wonderful example of a hand drawn batik from the town of Cirebon on the North coast of Java. The design is the famous "megamendung" storm clouds but given a new twist with the addition of birds and flowers. The design features 5 layers of blue each of which requires a wax and dyeing process. The cloth measures 1m. x 2.3m

  This loose fitting jacket in an indigo cotton fabric, comes from Northern Thailand. The trim is a traditional hilltribe batik from the Golden Triangle area. The loose freesize style will fit up to a 50 inch bust.

Silk ikat from Uzbekistan

  This hand made silk ikat fabric comes from Afghanistan and is made by people of Uzbeck origin. The width of the fabric is 37 cms (15 inches) It is made entirely by hand in the old fashioned way, by tying the weft threads off with a resistant thread and then dyeing it before weaving with a plain warp. The design is traditional to Central Asia. Price per metre.

Hand carved puppet from North Java (female)

  These rod puppets come from Cirebon, a town in Northern Java. They have a hand carved head and body and are dressed in traditional costume with a batik skirt and striped jacket. Complete with a wooden block for standing the puppet in.
These puppets are all individually made and may vary slightly from the photographs.

Felt doll from Uzbekistan

  These dolls are made by hand and each one is an individual! The women who make them are expert felt makers and their skills are supported by working on this UNESCO sponsored project. There is only one model to choose from at the moment as we are awaiting a new delivery! A woman with a child in her arms. She has long plaits, traditional dress and a unique expression.

Turkish traditional natural dyed kilim

  This traditional kilim (flat weave rug) was woven by women in Konya in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The rug is made from naturally dyed sheep’s wool which has been hand spun on a drop spindle. The wide range of colours are obtained from madder root which gives many different shades from dark red to apricot, indigo for all kinds of blue, camomile, dyers weld and other locally grown plants for yellow, walnut shells, pomegranate skins and oak tree galls for shades of brown and mauve. Green is made from indigo and yellow dyes. Vegetable dyeing is presently enjoying a renaissance in Turkey after having completely died out in the early 20th century. Size 127 cms. x 103 cms.
