Blue and white batik
This hand stamped batik fabric comes from Java, where the very best batik in the world is produced.
It is made for us at a small family workshop in the town of Jogyakarta where batik has been made for many generations.
The white cotton is first waxed using a copper stamp called a "cap" (pronounced "tjap"). These stamps are handmade by skilled craftsmen who are becoming harder to find.
The cotton is then dyed blue, and the wax is removed in big vats of hot water to produce beautiful simple blue and white designs.
The batik is made on good quality cotton and is machine washable. Because of the final process, the dyes are very colour fast. The fabric is approx 44 inches (110 cms.) wide, and are sold by the metre.
