THE REAL COLOUR SHOW
Beautiful hand made and vegetable dyed kilims and rugs from Turkey.
In stock we have traditional Turkish natural dyed kilims (flat weave rugs) prduced by women in the Konya region of Central Anatolia, Turkey.
We also have contemporary natural dyed kilims produced in the Manisa region of western Anatolia, Turkey.
The rugs are made from sheep's wool dyed with vegetable dyes. The wide range of colours are obtained from madder root which gives shades from dark red to apricot, indigo for all shades of blue, camomile, dyers weld and other locally grown plants for yellow, walnut shells, pomegranate skins and oak tree galls for shades of brown and mauve. Green is made from indigo and yellow dyes.
Vegetable dyeing is presently enjoying a renaissance in Turkey after having almost completely disappeared in the early 20th. century.
