Hilltribe silver

This jewellery is made by Karen people living in Northern Thailand. The Karen are one of the most populous of the six hilltribe groups who live in the Golden Triangle area.

Karen people come from Burma but many have made their way into the northern and western regions of Thailand to escape the repressive regime over the border.

They are skilfull craftspeople who make wonderful weavings, baskets and metal work. The Karen have always made silver jewellery for themselves and sold traditional tribal designs to other hill tribe groups.

In the past it was possible to buy some traditional jewellery at night markets but only a small amount was available and the designs were not always suitable for westerners (who don't often have big enough holes in their ears for example). In recent years the Karen have started to produce silver jewellery on a larger scale, and this has been highly successful.

Here is a selection of rings, earrings, bracelets and soul keeper pendants.

HS3 Rounded spirals Rounded spirals £13.95
