Indigo resist dyed cotton
This indigo dyed cotton cloth comes from Yunnan province in South West China.
It is made by women of the Bai tribal minority, and is a traditional technique stretching back hundreds of years.
The designs are well known by the older women who start by stencilling onto the white cloth with a weak indigo solution. The patterns are then stitched and tied very tightly and the cloth is dyed in plant indigo. Several separate dips are required to achieve the intensity of the deep blue here.
Finally the threads are removed and the cloth ironed out to reveal the intricate designs.
The cotton is machine washable - some of the indigo will rub off and come out for the first wash or two - this is normal with natural vegetable indigo and it will not stain or run into other colours.
The cloth is approx 39 inches wide.
