Ikat woven cotton
This beautiful cloth is made in small home workshops in eastern Bali.
The technique of ikat weaving is famous in many parts of the world, including Thailand and the islands of Indonesia and is part of a long textile tradition.
The cloth is made by carefully measuring out the weft threads and then binding them tightly into sections with coloured plastic string. These are colour coded to form a pattern. The weft threads are dyed and some of the strings removed and each exposed section is dyed in turn. Finally the patterned weft threads are woven into a plain warp on a treddle loom. This is what gives ikat its characteristic shimmering effect.
The fabric is approx 1 metre wide with a selvedge line along each side.
Machine washable.
