African waxprint

This wax printed cotton was made at the ABC factory in Stockport, Manchester for export to West African countries.
A hundred years ago, there were numerous firms in Britain and Holland producing wax resist cloth for Africa, each tribal group having their own specific preferences for colours and designs.
As countries gained their independence, they produced their own cloth although wax print produced in Europe was still more highly valued for its design and quality. ABC in the UK and Vlisco in Holland were the last.
ABC was bought up by a Chinese textile company, but closed last year. The large copper rollers which applied the resin and the other machinery was sent to Chinese factories in Africa. These samples are therefore the remnants of a fascinating textile story.
